Turning People onto Poles

Before my friend got married she had a bachelorette party and we went to the bar. The bar we went to had a dance pole set up and because I'm "classically trained" in the art of pole dancing I showed off my sweet moves.

This was impressive to those who were watching and my friend Kara wanted me to teach her something. I did.

She's hooked.

I am the reason she started taking pole dance lessons. She's as into it as I am and she actually went and ordered a pole after completing level 1! I am totally jealous that she's getting a pole and I'm stuck living in my mother's basement for the next 3 months at least! There's zero room in the basement to set up a pole. In fact my basement currently looks like an episode of hoarders. The boxes are stacked to the ceiling and clothes are piled everywhere!

However, because we are super friends she's inviting me over once her pole is set up so we can practice together! I can't remember the last time I was so fucking stoked for something! Plus, she's learned how to go upside down (jealous!) and she said she'd teach me how!

I want my own pole SO bad!!! You have no idea! Do you remember when you were a little kid and it was Christmas time and there was that one present that you wanted more than anything in the world? You wanted it so bad that your chest ached whenever you thought about it, which was always, and you would have vivid dreams about how much fun you'd have once you got it? That's how I feel about my pole!

In the meantime I'll just have to continue going to the gym. I found an assisted pull-up machine. It's the closest thing I have to simulating pulling myself up on the pole, (other than doing actual chin-ups or pull-ups, which I can't even do one of.)

Wellbutrin: One Month Later

I've been taking Wellbutrin for a month now. The doctor wanted to see me to see how it's been going and if I'd like to continue taking Wellbutrin. I told him I did.

I feel like my normal self. It was a struggle at first getting used to the side effects, but most of them have gone away. For example, I realized that if I take my pill before eating breakfast I won't eat all day; I'll get dizzy and have a complete lack of energy. If I eat breakfast first I'm fine and normal throughout the day.

I was having a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep, but that too has passed. The random bouts of anxiety I felt at work and feeling overwhelmed has thankfully passed. That strange, neutral feeling has passed. I can feel highs and lows as opposed to just being leveled out all the time. In the past it would have been a more radical change, but now it's more gradual. My happy-to-sad ratio isn't plunging and spiking all the time. I feel in control.

The acne is still really bad. The doctor was surprised because it wasn't one of the listed side-effects. I didn't tell him I went online and read that others had it happen to them too once on Wellbutrin. He prescribed some junk to put on my face.

Alcohol is something I really miss! (For those who forgot/just tuning in, I can't mix large quantities of alcohol with my meds or it will induce a seizure!) Not being able to get drunk with my friends sort of makes me feel excluded. I want to do whatever my friends are doing. Being sober while all your friends are getting hammered is the absolute worst! On the bright side though, my friends don't drink too often. We can have the most amazing, hilarious time totally sober! I'm really thankful for that!

I haven't smoked weed or done any drugs since starting Wellbutrin. I'm nervous about it because I don't know how it will make me feel. Plus, none of my friends are into smoking pot any more. I don't want to get stoned alone!

Anyway, the Wellbutrin is great, working fine, I feel normal. I see the doctor in another 3 months to check to see how things are going.

Dad

My dad is dirt poor, living off half a pension. He doesn't have a job, but not by choice. He can't get hired anywhere. He gets his full pension in two years. He lives alone in the small town I grew up in. He has no family. He doesn't exactly have any friends. I don't see him as often as I should and I really should call him more often. He's lonely and bored.

We have the same conversations every time we talk.

"I'm broke. I can barely afford to live!"
"The price of groceries just keeps skyrocketing!"
"Back in the 1960's a loaf of break cost...."
"Back then you could afford to eat!"
"This is what I've been eating lately...."
"I wish I could win the lottery!"
"I bought a lottery ticket today..."
"If I won the lottery I would pack my bags and go to...."
"Today I rode my bike 40 kilometers."
"I've been watching some programs on TV lately...."
"This broke, I wore out that, I need a new one of these..."
"Life's tough."
"I can't take much more of this!"
"The landlords going to kick me out soon, but I have nowhere to go."
"I'm going to be living in my truck pretty soon!"
"My truck needs so many repairs, it's going to break down soon."
"I can't afford gas to go anywhere!"
"I'm not enjoying my retirement."

That's all he talks about, literally! It's sad. I feel pretty helpless. It's part of the reason why I sometimes avoid visiting and calling, which is horrible, I know! I like talking to my dad because he tells good stories and he's always really happy when I finally call. He misses me. He misses having meaningful relationships. I miss him too. He makes me feel depressed at the same time though. His situation is shitty. He brought it upon himself, but it still feels unfair. He has a lot to give; a lot to share. Nobody will give him the time of day.

The point of this blog post is for it to be a therapeutic experience for me. I just got off the phone with him a few minutes ago and he makes his situation seem so dire all the time, like he's doomed for life. Dealing with it alone hasn't worked out in the past. I guess I just wanted to get it all off my chest. I do find it difficult to deal with alone.

Scene & Structure

I let my Creative Writing studies fall to the wayside for several months. I'm back at it again! I finished the text and submitted my exam. I got only one question wrong on the multiple choice test giving me a fair score of 95%. I'm now stuck at the part that I always get stuck at - coming up with an idea to write about.

Here's my problem: I consistently think of great novel ideas, but they're novel ideas, not short story ideas. In this writing assignment I must include 2 scenes and a sequel so that I can demonstrate what I learned from the book, Scene & Structure by Jack. M. Brickham. (I found the book to be slightly confusing and dull at times.) To try to scale down these grandiose plots in my mind feels like I'm cheating myself because I know there's so much more I want elaborate on.

So far I've written a paragraph. It's an okay paragraph, but just okay. It might not work as a good story opener because it feels as though I'm missing something and I don't know what my story is about yet. I have half a character in mind, but he's not really fully developed yet.

I have this writing folder on my laptop that includes a hodge-podge of half baked story ideas, loose character sketches, and fragmented writing samples. Every once in a while I go through it for inspiration. The reason I never tied up these loose ends is because as I was writing, I lost sight of what my story goals were or became bored because the story was heading nowhere and I didn't know where to take it next. All very normal stuff.

I'm just going to have to take my time and wait for something to come to me.

Would You Buy Your Daughter a Vibrator?

I'm sure everyone's heard about the infamous episode on Oprah where the sexpert, Dr. Berman, suggested buying your teen daughter her first vibrator. Watch the episode here if you'd like to. It's totally awesome! There are plenty of people who disagree wholeheartedly. Oprah's friend, Gayle, thinks it's too much and Oprah puts her in her place which I thought I was great.

C'mon bloggers, you know me! I would undoubtedly buy my teen daughter her first vibrator. I would buy my pre-teen daughter a vibrator! Sex is everywhere. It's constant. It's prevalent. It's unavoidable.

Knowing how to give yourself an orgasm is empowering. A 12 year old boy can ejaculate in 2 minutes or less if he wanted to and he can do it again six more times before the day is through. For the ladies it's not always that easy. Many girls don't explore themselves the same way boys do, if it all. That's really unfortunate.

Obviously buying a young girl a 12 inch dong is overkill, and kind of creepy, but having something small and external that vibrates is totally appropriate in my opinion. It leaves room for safe exploration that can one day lead to safe experimentation. That's what it's all about right, being safe, no matter what you're up to?

I was a sexual being at a young age. I can count on both hands, twice, the numerous ways I tried to get myself off with makeshift sex toys I used after rummaging around the house. If I had a vibrator, omg, life would have been so much better! And less humiliating when my friends found strange things in my bedroom, (things I have yet to live down to this day!)

The first real vibrator I ever owned I bought when I turned 18. I was home alone when I tried it out for the first time and good thing too; I screamed. It was the most mind blowing orgasm I'd ever had in my life and I had been sexually active for 2 years already! I was like, where have you been all my life?

If I ever have a daughter, I want her to know her own body inside and out. I want her to feel comfortable with her body. I want her to be confident. I want her to be informed. Happy, healthy girls with high self-esteem don't give up their virginity to just anyone! When she decides she's ready to have sex, I want her to have a fulfilling sex life! Bad sex isn't fun; it's just awkward and frustrating. Knowing what you like in the bedroom makes you a better lover for your partner while simultaneously satisfying yourself.

Teems are going to have sex whether the parents condone it or not. A vibrator isn't going to pressure my daughter. It's not going to get her pregnant or give her an infection. A vibrator won't break her heart, or call her a slut. In fact, it will probably make her feel happy and help her sleep better! A win-win situation in my eyes.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

In the summer I was matched with an 11 year old girl named Elle. She was my little and I was her big. Today that matched closed prematurely. I signed a contract saying that I would spend time with my little either weekly or bi-weekly for one year. After that I could determine if I wanted to continue with that match or get a new match.

Elle and I were having problems getting together as often as we were supposed to. I'd set a date to hang out and Elle would forget, or her mom would forget, and something always came up that either delayed things by a few hours, or days, or weeks... It was frustrating.

It seemed as though Elle had too many other things going on that she didn't have time for us to get together.

I brought it up with our case worker and the case worker talked to Elle and her mom. Turns out I was right! Elle didn't want to continue with the match. She had too many other things going on. However, she had nothing but great things to say about me. She thought I was fun and said we always had a good time whenever we did get together. I had fun with her too. She's a cool kid!

Normally when you close a match you get together one last time to hang out and say goodbye. Elle didn't want to do that. I'm not offended. I wasn't too attached to her to be honest. We rarely saw each other.

Now I'm going to be matched up with someone else, hopefully soon. I really like the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. There are many places that a person can volunteer their time; animal shelters, food banks, sporting events ect, but for me, I really love children.

Some children are dealt a shitty hand and have fucked up childhoods. Some children don't get to be children for very long and are forced to grow up fast. I had an awesome childhood. I was never hungry. I never felt scared or unsafe. I was quite privileged, getting to travel every summer and be a part of a ton of extra-curricular activities. I hope that I can do with my new match the things that I used to do as a child. Things that she wouldn't have experienced otherwise.

I wish Elle the best. She's a smart girl, very funny, personable, and an all around gem. She's got a lot going for her and a ton of resources at her finger tips. In my opinion, she is not a child at risk. She's part of a loving, stable family and has a lot of friends and does well in school.

I hope my next match is as cool as Elle.

Wellbutrin Cons

There seems to be a number of side-effects that I'm experiencing while taking Wellbutrin, and they are not positive.
  • Acne. It's never been this bad in my entire life, not even when I was teenager!
  • No appetite. I'm not as hungry any more. I skip meals, or don't eat full portions.
  • Insomnia. It's so hard to fall asleep and stay asleep. I always wake up before my alarm clock.
  • No energy. I'm dead tired ALL the time. It could be a combination of the lack of food and lack of sleep. I've tried taking naps and that doesn't work either.
  • Headaches. They're constant. I find it hard to concentrate.
  • Irritability. This could be because of my headaches and lack of energy. I have no patience anymore.
  • Sensitivity. I'm crying a lot more. I get frustrated and sometimes I take things too personally.
  • Anxiety. I'm not usually an overly-anxious person. I'm finding that I'm getting overwhelmed quicker than before and sometimes crying about it. However it's not effecting work or my social calendar.
Pros.... Hmmm....

Yeah can't think of any at the moment.

I'm not having a fun time. I don't want to take this pill anymore. It's making me feel like shit.

I ordered my SAD lamp today. It's the Phillips Wake-Up Light, Dawn Simulator. It cost a lot of money, over $200 with shipping and handling. It's pretty cool. It slowly starts to come on 30 minutes before the time you want to wake up going from dim to extremely bright in your eyes. It simulates natural sunlight without UV rays.

There are 4 different "nature" sounds to choose from to accompany the light in waking you up. Or you can choose a soft beeping, or the the radio, or nothing at all.

You can also use it to help you go to sleep. It starts off bright and slowly dims down until it's off over a set period of time that you input, like 15 minutes or something. It should be here in a few weeks and I look forward to using it. Perhaps I won't have to take the anti-depressants.

Getting Scared

Things about Chelsea Ribbon:
1) I startle easily.
2) People think it's funny to scare me because they get such a good reaction.
3) People startle and scare me on a dailty basis on purpose and also by accident.

There is one particular coworker of mine who shall remain nameless for now. He absolutely loves to scare me! He doesn't give me a little jump, or a spook either - he makes me scream at top of my lungs and then he laughs and laughs about it! Everyone around laughs. Ha! Ha! Chelsea got scared again!

(Side note: I'm having flash backs of college and my classmate Steve Davey who scared me ALL the time!)

It's all in good fun, but I started to wonder if this is really good for me? Is it healthy to get scared? Am I putting too much stress on my heart and will I die young because of a heart attack?

I've been doing a small amount of research and came to a solid conclusion: Getting scared is a heart healthy activity!

We all need a certain amount of stress in our lives in order to accomplish things. Sometimes short term stress will give you that boost you need in order to finish an important project on time for example. That is called positive stress.

Negative stress is when large portions of your daily life is filled with stress and you can no longer manage it. Obviously some people can handle stress more effectively than others. It's possible for one person's positive stress to be another person's negative stress.

This all relates back to the heart. Prolonged stress can contribute to heart disease, high blood pressure, and strokes, and make you more susceptible to catching colds. Eventually it can get to the point where even if you're just resting your heart will be working much harder to get your blood moving. Your heart can't cope when you actually need it to work harder, such as sprinting to catch a bus, and you may experience chest pains. Don't scare people with heart problems! They might die!

With all that being said, for a person with a healthy heart, such as mine, getting scared is actually a good work out for your heart! The rush of adrenline makes your heart rate and blood pressure go up temporarily. You breathe more and your heart's contractions increase. This is all very healthy and the cardio effects are similar to that of running on a treadmill.

Working out your heart causes your cardiovascular system to become more effective. Even at rest, your heart will beat strongly and easily, supplying all your muscles and orgains etc with what they need to work efficiently too.

But there's more!

On top of the adreneline rush and all those heart healthy tidbits, being scared also makes you giddy. Apparently, fear and hilarity are very similar, (they engage the same neurotransmitter in your brain,) and that's why after we get a good scare our first reaction afterward is to laugh. Laughing is really good for you!

Plus, getting scared is a really great bonding experience; it allows people to take on different roles, such as the care-giver and the care-receiver. It's recommended that on a first date you go on a roller-coaster ride or watch a horror film together because after the initial fright is over the body gets flooded with feel-good hormones and you feel closer and more attracted to the person you're with because that person experienced the same thing you did.

So, there you have it! After learning all that, I think I must have the healthiest heart ever!
